This is the first UK printing of the first edition of THE HEART OF A CONTINENT: A NARRATIVE OF TRAVELS IN MANCHURIA, ACROSS THE GOBI DESET, THROUGH THE HIMALAYAS, THE PAMIRS, AND CHITRAL, 1884-1894 by Francis Younghusband. This book was published in London by John Murray in 1896. The book measures 237mm tall x 160mm, and has 409 pages, 4 folding maps (1 in pocket), 18 b/w plates, index. One of the better and more important books on Central Asia. Includes crossing of the Mustagh Pass to the Baltoro Gl and discovery & exploration of the Gasherbrum & Urdok Glaciers. Younghusband was probably the first Westerner to view the north side of K2.

CONDITION: Original olive green cloth, double gilt border with swirls front, gilt lettering front surrounded by gilt border, gilt lettering and swirled end rules spine, original faint green patterned EPs. Much better condition than most copies, clean covers, bright gilt on front and spine, fading very tips of cover corners, tight binding, minor browning to EPs, no foxing, solid binding, near Fine.
