WIESSNER'S ACCOUNT OF THE 1939 ATTEMPTED ASCENT OF K2
VERY UNCOMMON BOOK
This is the first printing of the first edition of K2 TRAGÖDIEN UND SIEG AM ZWEITHHÖCHSTEN BERG DER ERDE by Fritz Wiessner. This book was published in München by Verlag Rother in 1953. The book measures 240mm tall x 170mm, and has 56 pages, 19 b/w photos, 2 maps. Text in german, no english edition (yet). History of K2 climbs up through first ascent by the Italians in 1954. Wiessner devotes 19 pages to the 1939 expedition where he nearly reached the top of K2 with the Nepalese Sherpa, Pasang Dawa Lama. They were above all of the major technical climbing difficulties and certainly would have reached the summit if Pasang Dawa had not insisted on stopping the ascent, refusing to climb in the dark. The 3 page biography of Wiessner and the 8 page account of the first ascent of K2 in this book were written by Dr. Franz Grassler.
