This is the first UK edition of TRAVELS AMONGST THE GREAT ANDES OF THE EQUATOR by Edward Whymper. These three volumes were published in London by John Murray in 1891 and 1892. Volume I: 1892, first edition, [235mm tall x 160mm, 456 pages, 20 full page engravings, 118 in-text engravings, 4 maps (3 folding including large one at end text & large one in rear cover pouch), 10 appendices, index]; Volume II [ Supplementary Appendix To Travels Amongst The Great Andes Of The Equator. 1891, first edition, 8vo (same size as volume I, matching binding), xvii + 147 pages, 14 plates and 42 in-text illustrations, index]; volume III [ How To Use The Aneroid Barometer. 1891, first edition, 8vo PB, 214mm tall x 153mm, 61 pages, several tables]. all volumes in original bindings. vol I & vol II: original olive green cloth, original dark brown coated EPs, gilt design top & lower edge front to spine, gilt lettering spine, same edge design embossed on rear. vol III: very light gray wrappers with black lettering front & rear. Volumes two and three were published in 1891 a year before the main text volume. They were all sold separately and not initially as a set. Volume 2 is mainly a catalog of specimens that Whymper brought back to England from Ecuador. He hoped to sell these to scientists and universities, hence the rush to publish this volume first. The aneroid barometer book has 1891 on the title page but the introduction notes that some parts of this volume are copied from volume one, the main text volume, and states that they were published simultaneously but sold separately. There must have been some delay in the printing of volume one that resulted in the date 1892 being placed on the title page of the first printing of the first edition. Volumes two and three are much less common than volume one. Volume three, the aneroid barometer volume, is truly rare and extremely difficult to obtain.

CONDITION: Original bindings as described above. There ar no restorations to any of the volumes but a bookplate has been removed from the front pastedown of volume one and volue two (see photos). Volumes one and two have matching slight darkening to spines and matching faint spotting to spines (so they were probably always together). Both volumes are in clean and bright condition, solid bindings, no foxing, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, complete with all plates, maps, tables. Volume three, by far the rarest, is in original wrappers in nice condition with some darkening to spine and edges, clean, no foxing, complete, very small chip to tip of lower front corner, minor wear to top edge of front cover. Solid binding with nothing loose, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. Very rare as a complete set in such nice condition. Price: $1500.
