CONDITION: Original tan cloth, gilt decoration & patterns cover, gilt lettering spine, original brown coated EPs. This is very likely the very first issue of the first USA edition since the binding is nearly identical to the binding of the first UK edition (except most copies of the first UK edition do not have the gilt decoration on the front cover). This binding is very uncommon for the first USA edition. Most were issued in green cloth with illustration of climbers on the front cover. Most of the spine gilt missing, corners are rubbed, the original coated brown paper is cracked inside at the hinges (but the hinges are tight & secure), binding is secure and tight, some browning to edges of pages with minor chipping on edges (margins only) of a few pages. The large folding map in the rear pocket is complete but is split along the crease of one segment, and some archival paper repairs have been made on some of the other creases. Good working copy of an important book. Complete with all plates, pages, and maps. Price: SOLD.
