This is the first UK edition (first printing) of Don Whillans -- Portrait of a Mountaineer. This book was published in London by Heinemann in 1971. The book measures 222mm tall x 137mm. It has 266 pages, 25 b/w photos, index. This is the only hardcover edition (unless some new edition has been published recently). Autobiography of an outstanding British mountaineer, accounts written by Whillans linked together by additional biographical notes written by Ormerod “to bring some objectivity into what otherwise would have been a purely subjective account...” Difficult climbing: UK, Alps (W Face Dru, Blaitière, Bonatti Pillar, Walker Spur, Frêney Pillar Mont Blanc, Eigerwand), Karakoram (Masherbrum, Trivor), Patagonia (Aiguille Poincenot, Central Tower Paine), Gauri Sankar, more.
CONDITION: The book is bound in original blue cloth covered boards with gilt lettering spine. Original dust jacket has some flecking at corners, 15mm clean tear upper front, 4cm tear lower rear near spine). The book has some tiny spotting on covers (common for this book), no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, tight binding, no foxing. Price: SOLD.
