This is an original chromolithograph titled THE WETTERHORN, FROM NEAR GRINDELWALD after a watercolor painting by Elijah Walton. This is not a modern copy. It was produced in Great Britain in 1873 by M. & N. Hartman for the book, VIGNETTES: ALPINE AND EASTERN, by Elijah Walton and T. G. Bonney. This is a plate extracted from a broken, incomplete example of that book. The rectangular plate with the image measures 209mm tall x 158mm. The oval image has a height of 180mm and a width of 132mm. The plate is mounted on archival card (acid free) that measures 357mm tall x 304mm. Included with the chromolithograph is the original caption page of text written by Bonney. Walton's books of his paintings of alpine peaks are very scarce, among the least common of early books on the Alps. JP MOUNTAIN BOOKS does not break apart viable old books to sell the pieces. We always hope to restore and complete rare books when possible. This plate and one other were acquired at an antiques fair, already extracted and matted.

CONDITION: Original chromolithograph and original page of text. The chromolithograph is in fine condition with no flaws, clean, bright, complete. The page of caption text has clean 3cm tear lower edge and a 1cm tear right-side edge, some foxing in the margins. Price: $75.
