This is the first printing of the first USA edition of AMERICANS ON EVEREST by James Ramsey Ullman and members of the expedition. It was published in Philadelphia by the J.B. Lippincott Company in 1964. The book has been SIGNED by Willi Unsoeld & by Dr Tom Hornbein on the short-title page. There is also a signature by another person there, but I do not know if that person was connected to the expedition. Copies of this book signed by Willi Unsoeld are very scarce and rarely appear for sale. This hefty book measures 241mm tall x 153mm, and has 429 pages, 120 b/w & 7 color photos, 1 map + EP map, 2 appendices. This is the main account of the fourth team to reach top of Everest (after British, Swiss, Chinese), the first USA ascent (Jim Whittaker & Nawang Gombu), first ascent of the West Ridge & first traverse of the mountain (Unsoeld & Hornbein) plus same-day ascent via S Col by Barry Bishop and Lute Jerstad. This is the true first printing of the USA first edition, not the Book of the Month Club reprint. The BOMC edition is nearly identical to the first printing, even stating "first edition" on the copyright page, but it differs from this first printing in that it has a dimple mark on the lower rear cover near the spine. The item offered here is the first printing. There is no dimple mark on the rear cover.

CONDITION: Original navy cloth, white and blue lettering on spine. This book has been SIGNED by WILLI UNSOELD and by TOM HORNBEIN on the short-title page. The book is in very good condition with fading to the top edges of the cover, tight binding, no foxing, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages other than the signatures on the short-title page. The original dust wrapper has a 2cm tear upper front near spine, minor wear at corners, price-clipped flap corner. Price: $SOLD.
