VERY UNCOMMON SIGNATURES

This is the first printing of the first edition of THE SEA AND THE SNOW. THE SOUTH INDIAN OCEAN EXPEDITION TO HEARD ISLAND by Philip Temple. This book was published in Melbourne by Cassell Australia Ltd in 1966. The book measures 219mm tall x 137mm, and has 188 pages, 23 b/w photos, EP map. Account of the first ascent of highest point of Heard Island, Mawson Peak of Big Ben (2745m). H.W. Tilman skippered the ship that the party used to reach the island. There had been several previous failures to climb Big Ben before this expedition. Heard Island is one of the remotest places on the planet. This was a very successful, small-scale, independent expedition that could have gone wildly wrong without the members' proper planning and superb execution based on vast, hard-won experience. A real adventure, largely ignored, but better than countless others that have received much greater attention. INCLUDED with the book is an original expedition postcard signed by the team during the sailing and mailed from Albany Western Australia after being franked at Kerguelen. The cards were sold to anyone for five shillings as a way to raise funds for the expedition. The explanation for the cards is given on page 50 of the book. The card is hand-signed by each team member including H. W. Tilman and Philip Temple. Tilman is famous for his Everest and Himalayan climbing and other remote sailing epics. Temple made the first ascent of Carstensz Pyramid in 1962 accompanied by Heinrich Harrer. This signed postcard is very uncommon.

CONDITION: Original navy boards with white lettering and patch on spine. The book is in clean condition, no rubbing,tight binding, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, slight tanning to pages. The original dust jacket has rubbing at edges, minor loss at spine tips, usual diffuse rubbing to covers, price-clipped flap corner. The expedition postcard has brown spot on edge opposite the signatures, lacking postally used stamp, cancel mark present, expedition cachet present, Kerguelen franking present. The signatures are strong and not faded, the photograph side of the postcard has some brown spotting, minor wear at corner tips. Price: SOLD
