This is the first printing of the first UK edition of DOCTOR ON EVEREST by Peter Steele. This book was published in London by Hodder & Stoughton in 1972. It is signed on the title page by Peter Steele. Included with the book is an expedition postcard signed by 22 team members and mailed from base camp. The card is signed by Dougal Haston, Peter Steele, Naomi Uemura, Reizo Ito, Michel Vaucher, Yvette Vaucher, John Cleare, Gary Colliver, Bill Kurban, Murray Sale, Leo Schlömmer, David Isles, Wolfgang Axt, Juréc Surdel, David Peterson, Antony Thomas, Ian Stuart, Ian Howell, Duane Blume, Ned Kelly, John Evans, and one undetermined signature (possibly that of Sirdar Pembatharkay). The book measures 222mm tall x 141mm, and has 222 pages, 32 b/w photos, 3 maps, index. The author was one of the MDs on the 1971 International Expedition that attempted climbing Everest's SW Face and West Ridge (5 Americans, 2 Austrians, 8 Britons, 1 Frenchman, 1 German, 1 Indian, 1 Italian, 2 Japanese, 2 Norwegians, 2 Swiss). He tells of his personal & medical experiences along with narrarive of the expedition events. There was plenty of controversy between team members, the needless death of Harsh Bahuguna, and desertion by several members. This expedition is often noted as an example that talent alone does not create a good team.

CONDITION: Original black boards, gilt lettering spine. The dust jacket is in nice condition with no chips, no tears, price-clipped flap corner. The book is signed by the author on the title page; otherwise, there are no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. The covers are clean and not rubbed. There is a light crease mark along the length of the spine. No foxing, tight binding. The expedition postcard is in nice condition with all signatures being strong and not faded. In the photo of the card the street address of the former owner has been concealed in the photo (not on the card, just on the digital image) to protect privacy. Price: $425.
