This is the first printing of the first edition of THE VALLEY OF FLOWERS by Frank S. Smythe. This book was published in London by Hodder and Stoughton in 1938. The book measures 229mm tall x 145mm, and has 322 pages, 16 colour photo plates, 2 maps (1 folding), index. The photos here are nicer than those in his photo albums. Account of 4 months in the Garhwal Himalaya including the Bhyundar Valley where he took the photos of the flowers in this book. Several first ascents in lightweight style, including first ascent of Mana Pk (7273m) & Nilgiri Parbat (6483m), & attempts on Rataban, Nilkanta, & Dunagiri. His climbing partners were Sherpas. This is one of Smythe's best expedition books. Includes a chapter on the Yeti and his investigation of large footprints in the snow near the Bhyundar Pass.

CONDITION: Original green cloth, gilt lettering spine. Clean covers, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, a tiny bit of foxing on short title page otherwise no foxing on any pages, tight binding, complete with all photo plates, maps, and pages. The original dust jacket is in better than average condition for this book: clean, tiny loss at the tips of upper spine corners, 1cm tear upper rear, complete with original price on flap corner.
