SHADOW OF THE MATTERHORN
THE LIFE OF EDWARD WHYMPER
BY IAN SMITH
2011 FIRST EDITION
SOON TO BE WINNER OF SEVERAL BOOK AWARDS
This is the first edition of SHADOW OF THE MATTERHORN -- THE LIFE OF EDWARD WHYMPER by Ian Smith. This book was published in Ross-On-Rye by Carreg in 2011. The book measures 24cm tall x 16cm, and has 336 pages, 22 color photos, 4 color illustrations, several b/w photos, several engravings from Whymper's work, copious notes, large bibliography, excellent index, EPs decorated with Whymper family tree. This is a superb biography of the pioneering climber, Edward Whymper. Besides noting the obvious, significant mountaineering accomplishments of Whymper, this book goes far into presenting the character of the man. Tremendous research succeeds in unveiling a very intelligent, sympathetic Whymper who previously seemed distant (intentionally) to a skeptical public. This is a very good historical work. The typeface size is small (about 9 point) to make this a manageable single volume; otherwise, this book would be 600 or more pages long if printed in standard size (12 point) typeface.
CONDITION: Navy boards with gilt lettering spine. The dust jacket is flawless. The book is in perfect condition (unread) with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages -- except the author has signed the title page [unsigned copies are also available]. Price: $50.
