This is the first printing of the first edition of LURE OF EVEREST -- FIRST INDIAN EVEREST EXPEDITION by Brigadier Gyan Singh, the leader of the expdition. This book was published in 1961 in Delhi by the Publications Division of the Ministry Of Information & Broadcasting of India. The book measures 22cm tall x 14cm, and has 212 pages, 63 b/w photos, 3 maps, text illustrations, 4 appendices, index, color frontis. Account of the 1960 first Indian expedition to attempt climbing Mt Everest. High winds and cold weather forced retreat after reaching 28300 feet on the Khumbu South Col route. The summit attempt teams included M.S. Kohli, Sonam Gyatso, Narinder Kumar, and Nawang Gombu who later summited with Jim Whittaker in 1963 and again with another Indian expedition in 1965. Tenzing Norgay was chief advisor to the expedition and helped with the planning. The text contains some interesting anectdotes about Tenzing and other Sherpas including Gyalzen.

CONDITION: Original rough weave cloth as issued by the publisher, dark navy lettering spine. The has some of the usual sporatic discoloration (likely from the binding glue) probably dating to time of production. Clean and no soiling or rubbing. No previous owner marks or writing on any pages. No foxing. Tight binding. Three pages have crease mark in upper corner near the end of the book. Overall considerably better condition than what is usually found for this book. The original dust jacket has some rubbing at the folds, loss of 5mm² at upper spine corner, better condition than normal for this jacket that is usaully trashed. Price: $150.
