BY ERIC SHIPTON
1938 FIRST UK EDITION
SCARCE ORIGINAL DUST JACKET CLASSIC KARAKORAM BOOK.
CLASSIC KARAKORAM BOOK.
Examples of the first edition with the original dust jacket are scarce.
This is one of the classic books of the mountaineering literature. Shipton describes his exploration of the Karakoram's Shaksgam & N side area of K2 in 1937. This was a very small expedition that consisted only of Shipton, H. W. Tilman, M. A. Spender, J. B. Auden, seven Sherpas (under Sirdar Ang Tharkay), and four Balti porters. This five-month expedition mapped 1,800 square miles of rugged, glaciated, uninhabited country containing many of the world's most spectacular mountains.
This book is bound in publisher's original black cloth with red lettering on front cover & spine. The dust jacket is original.
CONDITION: The book is in very good conditon with a few minor marks to covers. The tips of the cover corners are lightly rubbed (loss of color but no loss of cloth). The spine lettering is slightly faded but much less than usual due to DJ shielding it from bright light. The pages are clean and bright (no foxing). There are no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. The folding map at the end is crisp and fine except for a 4cm tear near the middle of the upper edge mainly restricted to the blank margin area. The binding is solid and tight with no cracking. The endpages are original, clean, unmarked and not cracked. There have been no restorations to the book or to any pages in it.
The dust jacket has 3cm deep x 2cm loss upper rear near spine with a 3cm tear extending into the jacket from the bottom of the loss (some crinkling to jacket here), 1cm deep loss at base of spine, 1cm tear bottom rear, 4cm tear lower front near spine with 5mm loss at edge, generally clean with less rubbing than usual, 1cm thin loss at corner tips along flap creases. The red spine title lettering has faded to orange as usual. The original dust jacket flaps are complete (no loss) and the original printed price is present on the lower front flap. There have been no restorations to the dust jacket. Price: $1,535.
