AT THE SHARP END
BY PAUL NUNN
1988 FIRST EDITION
GOOD WRITING ABOUT MOUNTAIN WRITING
UK, ALPS, HIMALAYA & KARAKORAM
This is the first printing of the first edition of AT THE SHARP END by Paul Nunn. This book was published in London by Unwin Hyman in 1988. The book measures 257mm tall x 168mm, and has 201 pages, 73 b/w photos, index. Witty, biting, & sometimes humorous collection of Nunnís writings on climbing and climbers. Includes many climbing book reviews often with additional information about the expeditions & members that are not noted in the books. Taken together these writings form a widening perspective of the climbing scene from the 1960ís to the 1980ís, from the UK to the Himalaya. Nunn was killed by a serac collapse in the Karakoram in 1995. I found this book hard to read in one sitting, but would often have trouble setting it down until finishing each topic. Each is engaging, mainly due to Nunn's superior writing. Nunn knew or met most of the climbers discussed in this book.
