ONE OF THE PRIMARY EVEREST BOOKS

This is the third printing of the first USA edition of THE STORY OF EVEREST by Captain John Noel. This book was published in Boston by Little, Brown, & Co. in February 1928. This has the same format and contents as the first impression of September 1927. This book has a presentation note from Noel in 1930 mounted on the front pastedown. The note has been signed "Captain John Noel" which is much rarer than his "John Noel" which is the way he would sign his name in later years. This book was presented to a school library during his 1930 lecture tour in the USA. This book was apparently never circulated in the library because it has no library marks of any sort. Probably somebody on the staff took it home to keep in their collection, or it was set aside as an exhibit. The book measures 225mm tall x 145mm, and has 258 pages, 38 b/w photos, 3 appendices. This is the US edition of Through Tibet To Everest. It is mainly the account of the first three attempts on Everest in 1921, 1922, and 1924. Noel also relates his travels in disguise in Tibet in 1913 during an attempt to reach Everest. Noel describes the disappearance of Mallory & Irvine, himself being a witness on the scene. Noel was the chief photographer on the 1922 & 1924 expeditions. This US edition has 16 more photos than the UK edition.

CONDITION: Original blue cloth with lighter blue lettering front cover & spine, small decoration of Everest on front cover. Uncommon original dust jacket (1cm deep loss around the top of the spine, other 1cm loss top edge front and rear, edge rubbing). The book has some wear at the spine ends, slight darkening to spine, signed presentation note from Noel mounted on the front pastedown, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, clean, solid binding. The note is on good paper that is stable (not deteriorating). It has been mounted (probably in 1930) using wheat paste which is stable and will not corrode or break down. The writing is in good ink that is not fading. Price: $575.
