This is the first printing of the first edition of THE MAGIC BIRD OF CHOMO-LUNG-MA -- TALES OF MOUNT EVEREST, THE TURQUOISE PEAK by Sybille Noel. This book was published by Doubleday Doran in 1931. This is the true first printing of the book. The book measures 235mm tall x 155mm, and has 310 pages, 6 illustrated plates (by A. Avinoff), text illustrations. This book was published only in the USA despite the author being Celtic. During the British 1924 Mount Everest Expedition, the author travelled around Tibet talking to lamas, nobility, sherperds, traders, etc. gathering folk tales. John Noel, photographer and cinematographer on the Everest 1922 and Everest 1924 expeditions, was the author’s husband. Only the MAGIC BIRD tale relates directly to Mt Everest. The rest of the tales are Tibetan folklore. The book includes an interesting introductory chapter where the author explains how she obtained the tales from various Tibetans.

CONDITION: Original maroon cloth, orange decoration & lettering cover & spine. Uncommom original dust jacket is in nice condition with some minor loss at spine ends and tips of corners, price-clipped flap corner, 3cm tear along lower front flap fold. The book has some faint light splotches on covers (mainly rear -- see photo), tight binding, no foxing, previous owner name and date (1933) on short title page otherwise no owner marks or writing on any pages, complete with all plates and pages.
