THE NAKED MOUNTAIN
BY REINHOLD MESSNER
2003 FIRST EDITION
FULL ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST ASCENT OF THE RUPAL FACE OF NANGA PARBAT IN 1970
This is the first printing of the first USA edition of THE NAKED MOUNTAIN by Reinhold Messner. This book was published in 2003 by The Mountaineers in Seattle. The book measures 224mm tall x 137mm, and has 315 pages + 2 pages of ads, 34 color & 111 b/w photos, blue-white EP painting, EP map, bibliograhy. This is the account of the 1970 expedition to Nanga Parbat that launched Messner’s Himalayan climbing career, that created enormous controversy, that left his brother dead on the mountain. This was the first ascent of the biggest wall in the world, the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat. Reinhold and his brother, Günther, reached the summit and then descended the Diamir Flank, making the first traverse of the mountain, the second-ever traverse of an 8000er. Günther perished in an avalanche near the bottom of the descent. Much controversy and vicious rumours followed this expedition. Messner wrote a book, Die rote Rakete am Nanga Parbat, published in 1971 (his first Himalaya book) but it was quickly withdrawn from publication by court order obtained by Herrligkoffer for libel. Herrligkoffer passed away in 1991. This new book contains much of what was written in Die rote Rakete plus other material and thoughts. The controversy over the climb continued with two books being published in german by other members of the expedition, and at least one was ordered by courts to be withdrawn from publication. The 1970 Rupal Face climb was one of the most historically significant climbs in the evolution of Himalayan mountaineering, both as sport and career.
