NAKED BEFORE THE MOUNTAIN

BY PIERRE MAZEAUD

1974 FIRST EDITION

SEVERE CLIMBS IN THE ALPS

CENTRAL PILLAR OF FRESNAY WITH BONATTI

EVEREST 1971 SW FACE EXPEDITION

This is the first printing of the first edition of NAKED BEFORE THE MOUNTAIN by Pierre Mazeaud. This book was published in London by Victor Gallancz in 1974. The book measures 222mm tall x 135mm, and has 256 pages, 33 b/w photos, index. Author’s headline-making climbs. Includes vivid description of climb of Mont Blanc’s Central Pillar of Fresnay (to within 80m of top of difficulties) where Mazeaud, Bonatti, & Gallieni were the only survivors of 7 climbers caught in severe storm. Covers many severe Alps climbs & the 1971 International Everest Expedition: Grand Capucin, Chamonix Aiguilles, Cima Ovest di Lavaredo, Piz Badille, Walker Spur Grandes Jorasses, Dru West Face, etc. The blurb on the inside flap of DJ incorrectly states that only Mazeaud & Bonatti survived the stormy descent from Pillar of Fresnay. The chapter on Everest 1971 poignantly describes the discord and the sad lack of cooperation between the the two groups attempting different routes.

CONDITION: Original brown boards with gilt lettering spine. The original dust jacket has tiny loss at tips of spine corners, fading spine, otherwise clean and nice with original price intact on flap corner. The book has a slight bump upper rear cover corner otherwise it is in near fine condition with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, clean, no foxing, tight binding. Price: $35.
