This is the first edition (only edition?) of MOUNTAINEERING MAPS OF THE WORLD: KARAKORAM & HINDU KUSH. It was published in Tokyo by Gakushûkenkyû-sha in 1978. It is folio size, 371mm tall x 257mm, and has 350 pages, 32 pages of color photos, 78 black & white photos in the text, 30 full-page or double-page color maps, 19 black & white in-text maps.
This book is very hard to find.
An elaborate production, this book presents maps of the Karakoram, Hindu Kush, Nanga Parbat, Pamirs, Tien Shan & Peak Pobeda. The text is in japanese, but all photos are captioned in english, and the map names & the features on each map are spelled using the english alphabet. Most of the color maps are double-page in size. The japanese text gives a history of climbing and exploration for the peaks on each of the maps, followed by a list of references (often citations are in english) for each area.
This book is bound in publisher's original brown cloth, with embossed decoration front, gilt lettering and orange title block front cover, orange title block spine with gilt lettering, additional gilt and orange lettering spine. This book was published without a dust jacket (ie, no dust jackets were ever made for this publication). It comes with the original cardboard slipcase that has a color photo with title tipped-on around spine.
CONDITION: Original book covers and slipcase. Issued without a dust jacket. The book is in fine condition inside and outside with no marks or traces of a previous owner, no writing or marks on any pages. The book is crisp with a tight binding. Price: $975.
