ARGENTINE PLAINS AND ANDINE GLACIERS:
LIFE ON AN ESTANCIA, AND AN EXPEDITION INTO THE ANDES
BY WALTER LARDEN
1911 FIRST EDITION
CLIMBING ON MT TUPUNGATO WITH DR HELBLING
This is the first printing of the first Italian edition of ARGENTINE PLAINS AND ANDINE GLACIERS: LIFE ON AN ESTANCIA, AND AN EXPEDITION INTO THE ANDES by Walter Larden. This book was published in London by Fisher Unwin in 1911. The book measures 225mm tall x 145mm, and has 320 pages, 91 b/w photos, map, glossary, index. Author spent 7 months in 1888 & 9 months in 1908 on his brother’s estancia (describes all the workings) in Argentina about 100 miles from Rosario de Santa Fé. About 90 pages are on the Andes including many details of his attempt to climb Tupungato with Dr Helbling who reached 300 feet below summit before being rebuffed by high winds. They also climbed on the glaciers of nearby Cerro Juncal, and the author joined a different group up the Valle de los Horcones to the base of Aconcagua. Good descriptions of both the mountains and life below, with a considerable of natural history observations. This includes a now quaint chapter on “hints for Andine travel.” Very engaging writing and interesting content not normally found in travel books on the area. This book is becoming quite uncommon.
