1999 FIRST USA PRINTING
SIGNED BY GÖRAN KROPP
VERY UNCOMMON SIGNED FIRST PRINTING
This is the first printing of the first edition of ULTIMATE HIGH: MY SOLO ASCENT OF EVEREST by Göran Kropp (with David Lagercrantz). This book was published in New York by Discovery Books in 1999. The book measures 217mm tall x 140mm, and has 228 pages, 21 color photos, 3 small color maps, 1 route diagram, index. Story of Kropp who became the first person other than Sherpas to travel from his doorstep to the top of Mount Everest completely under his own power and without help by others. He rode his bike overland from Sweden to Nepal and then carried his big kit alone to Khumbu basecamp. Finally he climbed to the top without using supplemental oxygen, after forging his own route through the icefall. This took place during the killer season described in Krakauer’s book, Into Thin Air. This book also describes some of Kropp’s other climbs including K2 (briefly), his early years as a bad student, the Andes, and his strong opinions spiced with some gossipy jabs at other climbers. This book was withdrawn from publication in the UK after the publisher of the book lost a suit for libel against it. There are some good laughs in this book, both intentional and unintended. Kropp was a gregarious character and a fine athlete, a big guy who seemed emotionally and physically invincible while still being very likable. He was instantly killed from a relatively short fall in 2002 while craiging on practice cliffs about 140 miles ESE of Seattle. Kropp signed very few copies of his book and even fewer first printings of the book since it sold out to distributors & chain stores prior to any of his few lecture appearances. Only reprints were sold at his public speaking engagements.
CONDITION: Original light blue boards, darker blue spine lettered in gilt. The dust jacket is in fine condtion with no chips, no tears, clean, no fading. The book is in fine condition with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages other than Kropp's signature on the title page, no foxing, no rubbing, clean, tight binding. Price: $300.
