ASSOCIATION COPY SIGNED BY CLIMBER DISCUSSED IN BOOK

This is the first printing of WHERE THE CLOUDS CAN GO -- THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF CONRAD KAIN. It was published in New York by The American Alpine Club in 1935. This is the first and only printing of the 1935 first editon. Only 500 copies of the 1935 first edition were issued. The book measures 234mm tall x 160mm and has 456 pages, 29 b/w photos on 19 plates, index, with additional chapters by J.M. Thorington. The book was published posthumously (Kain died in 1934). This is a classic of mountaineering in Canada with 250 pages on climbing in the Canadian Rockies and in the Interior Ranges of British Columbia. Kain, born and raised in Lower Austria, was a guide & great climber. He made more than 100 first ascents & new routes in Canada, the Alps (mostly Dolomites & Gesäuse), & in New Zealand -- including first ascents of Canada's Mt Robson (or second ascent depending on one's interpretation of the Kinney/Phillips climb), Bugaboo Spire, & Mt. Louis.

CONDITION: Original blue cloth with gilt lettering spine and small gilt decoration front cover. This example of the book was once owned by Mary Sloman and is signed by her on the first blank page. Kain wrote about climbing with Sloman in chapter XVII, section 2 (4 pages). He guided her in 1915 to the summit on the last first ascent of a major peak in New Zealand's Mt Cook District, Mount Marie. There is a small red tick next to the Mt Marie entry in the list of New Zealand ascents for 1915-16 on page 348, an "X" penned next to the start of the 4-page section on the climb of Mount Marie, and a couple of old crease marks to the upper corner of page 354/55 where the corner had been folded to mark obviously the section on Sloman's climb. Kain writes that she was very pleased with the experience. There are no other marks or writing in the book. Some foxing (see photo below) on pages 353-354 probably due to the book having been opened to those pages by Sloman. Minor foxing on a few pages opposite photo plates otherwise no foxing. The covers are clean, slight rubbing (= fading) to the tips of corners, solid binding, slight browning to page edges, nice collectible example of the book. Price: $700.
