This is the 1954 original first printing of the first USA edition of K2 -- THE SAVAGE MOUNTAIN by Charles Houston and the team members. It was published in New York by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. in 1954. The book measures 218mm tall x 141mm and has 334 pages, 27 b/w & 9 colour photos, 7 appendixes, drawings, index. Near disastrous, yet almost successful 1953 attempt by Americans & one Brit. Great book, devoid of the whining drivel so often found in modern expedition books. Molenaar once noted, with disgust, that the sketched diagram of the accident in this book is mucked up, far from accurate. He added that the Adventure Library edition of 1994 is the only edition with a correct version of the diagram. This book was unanimously voted as one of the 5200 best mountaineering books.

CONDITION: Original 3/4 black cloth boards, red cloth around spine with gilt ice-axe dec front, gilt lettering spine. SIGNED on the title page by Charles Houston, Robert Bates, & Dee Molenaar. Original dust jacket (rubbed edges, tiny loss tips corners, two 1cm tears lower front). The book is in good condition with minor fraying bottom edge of spine, clean, previous owner stamp on blank FFEP and on rear blank EP, no other previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, pages are bright and clean, tight binding.
