ANNAPURNA

CONQUEST OF THE FIRST 8000-METRE PEAK [26,493 FEET]

BY MAURICE HERZOG

SCARCE 1952 FIRST UK EDITION

SIGNED BY LOUIS LACHENAL AND BY MAURICE HERZOG

ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR CLIMBING BOOKS OF ALL TIME

VERY GOOD READ

This is the true first printing in English of ANNAPURNA CONQUEST OF THE FIRST 8000-METRE PEAK [26,493 FEET] by Maurice Herzog. This book was published in London by Johnathan Cape in 1952. It is NOT the more common Book Society version of the first UK printing. Both the book and the dust jacket are true first printings. This copy has a slip of paper signed by both Maurice Herzog and by Louis Lachenal lightly tipped-in at the short-title page. Items signed by both Herzog and Lachenal are very uncommon. The book measures 204mm tall x 134mm, and has 288 pages, 3 color & 24 b/w photo plates, 5 sketch maps, 1 colored foldingg map with b/w photo panorama on backside, 3 route sketches, glossary. A classic among accounts of the first ascents of the highest peaks. This is a good read probably because of the author's romanticization of the account which is also the main criticism of the book by some mountaineering historians. Maurice Herzog, Louis Lachenal, Lionel Terray, Gaton Rébuffat, Ang-Tharkey, and Jean Couzy in action.

CONDITION: Original blue cloth hardcover with silver lettering spine, blue tinted top edge of text block. Very clean covers with no fading, bright spine lettering, no rubbing, no foxing, bright pages, tight binding, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, usual fading to the blue tinting of the top edge. Lightly tipped-in at the short-title page is a thick paper (like index card paper) slip signed by both Maurice Herzog and by Louis Lachenal, both signatures being on the same piece of paper. Both signatures are very strong and clear without any fading. The slip is not pasted on the page; instead, it is attached only at the gutter. It could be removed very easily without damaging the book or adjacent pages. The original dust jacket has some edge rubbing but it is in much better condition than what is usual for this jacket. It is complete with the original price printed on the flap corner. It is the first printing state of the dust jacket, not a jacket from a later prinitng. Price: $625.
