This is the third impression (same format, size, & contents as the first impression) of the first UK edition of IN HIGH PLACES by Dougal Haston. This book was published in London by Cassell in 1973. The book measures 224mm tall x 137mm, and has 168 pages, 20 b/w photos, index. INCLUDED with the book is a loosely inserted official expedition postcard from the 1967 BRITISH CERRO TORRE EXPEDITION which is discussed in a chapter in this book. This card has been hand-SIGNED by the team members: Dougal Haston, Peter Crew, Michael Burke, and Martin Boysen. It was mailed from Buenos Aires in December 1967, and it has the official expedition rubber stamp mark. The photo side of the card is an image of Cerro Torre. The card measures 203mm tall x 92mm. This book is Haston's fast-paced, introspective climbing autobiography. It includes the first ascent of the Eiger Direct where John Harlin perished in a fall, expedition to Cerro Torre in Patagonia (unsuccessful), Yosemite, first ascent of Annapurna S Face (Haston summited with Whillans), Everest 1971 international SW face expedition, Old Man of Hoy, Grandes Jorasses Shroud, N Face Matterhorn, Cima Ovest, etc. These hard climbs were with Mick Burke, Chris Bonington, Don Whillans, Jimmy Marshall, Robin Smith, Naomi Uemura, and many others. Captivating enough to read in one sitting. Haston of Scotland, one of the finest climbers of his generation, was renowned for his toughness, resilience, & resolve in difficult, unpleasant conditions. In 1977 he perished in a small snow avalanche while skiing near Leysin Switzerland where he was director of the famous mountaineering school. Subsequent to publication of this book, the author and Doug Scott made the first ascent of the SW Face of Everest in 1975.
