This is the first edition & first printing of the UK edition of THE EARLY MOUNTAINEERS. It was published in London by T. Fisher Unwin in 1899. The book measures 227mm tall x 145mm. It has 338 pages, 48 b/w plates, 13 appendices, index. Classic history of the origins of mountaineering, Gribble's book has been cited and quoted in most subsequent books on the history of mountaineering. Though this book brushes on the very earliest examples including Hebrew, Greek, & Roman visits to mountains, Gribble begins the serious histroy with Petrach's ascent of Mont Ventoux in 1335. Gribble continues the history with Leonardo da Vinci's ascent of Monboso, Dompjulian de Beaupre's ascent of Mont Aiguille, Conrad Gesner's climbs, Josias Simler's work, Johann Jacob Scheuchzer, Windham & Martel in Chamonix (full narratives of both included), early history of climbing on Mont Blanc, Pyrenees, Apenines.

CONDITION:Original dark blue cloth, gilt lettering spine and gilt decoration front cover, original black coated EPs, TEG. Overall nice condition, clean covers, slight darkening spine cloth, a little rubbing spine ends and tips corners, no foxing, no writing or marks on any pages except previous owner name lightly signed in pencil on pre-title page.
