VERY UNCOMMON EVEREST BOOK


This is the first edition of EVEREST. IS IT CONQUERED? It was published by the author in India and printed by J.N. Bose at the Indian Press Ltd. The book does not have a printed date of publication, but bibliographic references date it 1954. It measures 183mm tall x 125mm, and has 122 pages, 2 b/w photo plates, errata slip tipped-in at end. Author presents his thesis that the British Everest ascent of 1953 was faked. Much of the reasoning is completely preposterous, but this is interesting for the legitimate documentation of the ascent’s publicity in India and elsewhere, some discussion of Tenzing, and the politics of promoting Tenzing’s participation in the climb as an Asian success. This is one of the freakiest books in the mountaineering literature. Extremely uncommon.

CONDITION: Original stiff white paper card covers with black lettering front. original DJ (blank flaps except for price printed on inside front corner, flaps lightly glued at edges onto inside covers probably by the publisher -- every copy that we have encountered has had the flaps lightly glued-- 1cm deep chip lower spine, 1cm x 5mm deep chip upper front corner, edge wear), solid binding, no loose pages, previous owner name penned to inside front cover, no foxing, some wear at spine ends, VG Price: SOLD.
