This is the second edition of CLIMBS IN THE NEW ZEALAND ALPS by E. A. Fitzgerald. This book was published in London by T. Fisher Unwin in 1896. It is basically the second printing of the first edition, a little more than one month after the first printing. The first printing was 1000 copies and this second printing was 500 copies. There were no subsequent printings in this elaborate format. This second printing is the same as the first printing in every way except for the noting of printing on the verso of the title page. The book was issued in both reddish cloth and tan cloth with identical stamping for both. This is the tan cloth version. This is a big, hefty book that due to its weight (almost 5 pounds) is often in quite worn condition. The book measures 250mm tall x 178mm, and has 363 pages, 32 b/w photos, 27 drawings & paintings, folding map rear pocket, 4 appendices, index. Account of Fitzgerald’s climbs in New Zealand’s Southern Alps in 1895 with Zurbriggen & J. Clarke & C. Barrow. 5 major 1st ascents including that of Mt Tasman (3498m). Also includes account by Zurbriggen of new route up Mt Cook (was 3764m, now 3745m after top avalanched away 15 Dec 1991).
CONDITION: Original tan cloth with black decoration lower front, black title patches spine with gilt lettering. Much cleaner than average covers with virtually no rubbing. There is foxing on some of the plates, mainly on ones with tissue guards, most other plates and pages have very little or no foxing and are quite bright. Solid binding. Big gift inscription dated 1897 on the first blank page (front EP) otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. The main title patch on the spine has some of the usual chipping but most of the lettering is still present (see photo). Price: $225.
