This is the first USA edition of THE HIGHEST ANDES by E. A. Fitzgerald. This book was published in New York by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1899. The book measures 244mm tall x 163mm, and has 390 pages, 45 photos 1 fldg, 2 fldg maps, 4 appendices, index. One of the classic books of mountaineering in South America, this describes attempts by the author & the final solo push and first ascent of Aconcagua (6961m) by Mattias Zurbriggen, the great guide who died in 1917. Biographies (italian and a recent german one that copied from the italian biography) have stated that he became an alcoholic and died by hanging himself, but I can find no direct evidence and no firsthand account of this, which leads me to suspect that the suicide story stems from a misunderstanding, probably due to literal translation from english to italian, of Conway’s obituary of Zurbriggen in the Alpine Journal. This book also includes a detailed account of the second ascent of Aconcagua by Vines & Lanti, and the first ascent of Tupungato (6551m) by Vines & Zurbriggen. This book is illustrated with superb black & white photos, including several photogravure plates.

CONDITION: Original green cloth, TEG, original plain white EPs, gilt lettering cover & spine. clean covers, one very minor faint tiny 2mm spot on spine, bright gilt (slight dulling to the spine gilt), very tips corners lightly rubbed, no foxing, tight binding, the second large folding map has an archival tape repair (on verso) near the stub, nice solid copy, VG+.
