1953 PROGRAMME THAT ACCOMPANIED THE FIRST OFFICIAL LECTURES IN THE UK

This is an original programme, ASCENT OF EVEREST 1953, that accompanied the official lectures in the UK shortly after the successful first ascent of Mt Everest. No place, no publisher, and no date are indicated in this publication, but "Vail & Co. LTD., Ogle Stree, London. W,1" is printed in tiny letters on the bottom of the rear cover. It is a magazine size stapled paperback measuring 278mm tall x 206mm, not paginated [cover sheet + 16 pages], b/w photo front cover + 9 b/w photos + 3 b/w photos in ads (from the expedition), last 3 pages + rear endsheet and rear cover are advertisements relating to the expedition. This lecture programme was certainly published in 1953 based on the ads and writing. The first page is a congratulatory note by Philip, patron of the expedition. The next page is a brief message by John Hunt and a quote of the ascent from the Times. Then follows a one page introduction by E. Herbert (president of Alpine Club) and by J.M. Wordie (president of RGS). The following page is a list of the team with a brief biography for each member and list of the Himalaya Committee. Three pages of photos follow, and then photos and a narrative of the expedition (about 2 pages of text) by Wilfrid Noyce.

CONDITION: Original staple-bound pictorial wrappers. SIGNED by George Lowe on the team photo page, no other previous owner marks or writing on any pages. Some minor rubbing and minor soiling covers. Overall nice condition. Price: $95.
