This is the first printing of the first edition of A MOUNTAIN LIFE. THE STORIES AND PHOTOGRAPHS OF BRUNO ENGLER by Bruno Engler (edited by R. W. Sandford). This book was published in Canmore by the Alpine Club of Canada in 1996. This is one of 85 signed and numbered examples of the deluxe edition. This deluxe edition has been signed by Bruno Engler and by R. W. Sandford. In addition, the deluxe edition includes a real b/w photograph (202mm tall x 117mm) mounted on the FFEP and signed on the photo by Engler with a silver ink pen. The book measures 255mm tall x 220mm and has 140 pages, 84 b/w photos plus the real signed photo on the FFEP. Biographical, but mainly a collection of vignettes of memorable episodes of Engler's experiences in the Canadian Rockies. Born in Switzerland in 1915, Engler moved to Canada in 1939 taking a job as a mountaineering guide and ski instructor at Sunshine and Lake Louise, later settling in Banff where he became a celebrated raconteur of the earlier days of guiding climbs and skiing in the Canadian Rockies. This book relates Engler's stories of guiding, skiing, encounters with wild animals, filmmaking and acting. There are seven pages on Engler's climbs and experiences with Frank Smythe in the Canadian Rockies.

CONDITION: Original Japanese black silk cloth, gilt lettering front cover & spine, black EPs. This book was issued without a dust jacket (i.e., the publisher did not make a dust jacket for any example of this book). New condition with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, likely unread. Price: $175.
