This is the first printing of the first edition of SUMMITS AND SECRETS by Kurt Diemberger. This book was published in London by George Allen & Unwin Ltd in 1971. The book measures 240mm tall x 155mm, and has 344 pages, 78 b/w photos, 8 maps, index. Author’s first climbing autobiography. Climbs: N Face Matterhorn, Giant Meringue, N Face Eiger, Walker Spur, Peuteret Ridge, 1st ascent Broad Pk, 1st ascent Dhaulagiri, Tirich Mir, Greenland. Details of death of Buhl on Chogolisa. Often-praised book. The first edition is scarce. Though not recorded in any bibliographies, the UK hardcover edition of this book has been reprinted at least once. The true first printing is distinguished by price on the DJ of Ł5.50 or no price printed on the DJ flap, the latter being made for export outside the UK. The book offered here has the original price of Ł5.50 printed on the DJ flap.

CONDITION: Original blue cloth, silver lettering spine. Original DJ has a 6cm tear and a 3cm tear upper rear, rubbing at corners, 2cm tear upper front near spine corner, 2cm deep chip lower front near spine corner, not price-clipped with original printed price of Ł5.50 still present. The book covers have sunning along the top edges (mainly at the back) otherwise it is in near fine condition, tight binding, clean, no writing or marks on any pages, no foxing. Price: $185.
