This is the first printing of the first edition of VICTORY OVER K2 -- SECOND HIGHEST PEAK IN THE WORLD by Ardito Desio. This book was published in 1956 by McGraw-Hill in New York. This book has been signed on the short-title page by Achille Compagnoni and by Lino Lacedelli, the two who made the first ascent of the mountain. The book measures 218mm tall x 145mm, and has 273 pages, 63 b/w photos (on 24 plates), 3 maps, 1 chart. Official account of the first ascent of K2 (8611m) by the leader of the expedition. Serious controversy involving Bonatti, Compagnoni (summiter), Desio, and some periodicals followed this climb. A good—though huge—expedition marred by incidents on the last two days of the ascent, and by the subsequent bickering. Surprisingly, this was for many years the only book translated into english about the expedition.

CONDITION: Original blue boards, white lettering spine. Signed by Achille Compagnoni and by Lino Lacedelli on the short-title page with slight bleed-through of the ink onto the title page (see photo). The book is in nice condition with the usual flecking away of blue colored surface coating at the tips of the cover corners, solid binding, no foxing, clean covers, other than the two signatures there are no previous owner marks or writing on any pages. The original dust jacket is in better than average condition for this book with no tears, faint foxing-like spots mainly on spine and the edges, minute loss (about 1mm or less) at corner tips.
