BY ALEXANDRA DAVID-NEEL

1927 FIRST EDITION

CLASSIC OF TRAVEL IN OLD TIBET

UNCOMMON PICTORIAL COVERS

This is the first printing of the first edition of MY JOURNEY TO LHASA -- THE PERSONAL STORY OF THE ONLY WHITE WOMAN WHO SUCCEEDED IN ENTERING THE FORBIDDEN CITY by Alexandra David-Neel. This book was published in New York by Harper & Brothers in 1927. The book measures 225mm tall x 145mm, and has 310 pages + [3], 44 b/w photos on 17 sheets (most double sided), FEP map showing route. The author, disguised as a beggar pilgrim, journeyed to Lhasa with her adopted son, a practiced lama. David-Neel was a scholar of Oriental philosophy & religion, writing several books on the subject. She succeeded where notable others (Bonvalot, Grenard, Hedin) had failed, being among the first of any civilian, lay persons from the Occident to do so. Very charming, well-written account by a hardy, intelligent, witty, tough woman -- a major classic account of travel in old Tibet
