BY WILLIAM MARTIN CONWAY
1894 FIRST USA EDITION
THE FIRST MOUNTAINEERING EXPEDITION IN THE BALTORO KARAKORAM
CONDITION: Original dark reddish brown cloth, black & white embossed decoration front cover & spine, TEG, gilt lettering spine, black lettering front cover. This book has clean covers, some rubbing spine ends and tips of corners, original endpapers, no foxing. The rear pastedown has had something removed from it, probably a bookplate, since there is some old glue discoloration (there no longer is any glue there -- probably was wheat paste rather than glue). This is not an ex-library copy. There are no traces or remnants of any library marks. There is a previous owner crimp on the FFEP and his name/address stamp just above the crimp. No other owner marks or writing on any pages. The gutter between the verso of the short title page and the recto of the frontispiece has been taped with cloth binder's tape long ago (see photo), and cracked EPs have been expertly restored with Japanese paper (barely shows). There are no other repairs to the book. The binding is solid and not shaken, not weak. Much of the white part of the spine and cover decoration has disappeard or faded which is common for the USA edition of this book, and there is some dulling of the gilt spine lettering. While not a perfect example of the book, this is in slightly better than average condition for this big, heavy book that often has significant wear problems due to the weight. Price: SOLD.
