This is the first printing of the first edition of THE BOLIVIAN ANDES -- A RECORD OF CLIMBING AND EXPLORATION IN THE CORDILLERA REAL IN THE YEARS 1898 AND 1900 by Martin Conway. This book was published in 1901 by Harper in New York. The book measures 221mm tall x 141mm, and has 403 pages, 71 b/w photos, 2 maps, sketches, appendix, bibliography, index. Conway’s first ascent of Illimani (6438m) & near first ascent of Ancohuma (6427m) within 75m of summit. This is a classic of South American mountaineering literature. NOTE: The first USA printing is the true first printing of this book. All UK copies were printed in the USA. The USA edition has a more attractive binding with a front cover decorated in color whereas the UK binding is plain dark blue with gilt lettering on the cover & spine but no decorations.

CONDITION: Original grey cloth, brown lettering cover, gilt lettering spine, blue & white decoration of mountains on cover. The book has rubbed tips corners of spine, faint scattered tiny spotting rear, 1cm x 2cm light spot upper corner spine around to back cover, faded previous owner name/address stamp on bottom edge of text block (NOT ex-library, see photo), no other previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, clean pages, solid binding, generally nice condition. Price: $150.
