SCARCE FIRST-PERSON ACCOUNT OF THE FIRST ASCENT OF K2

This is the SECOND printing of the first edition of Uomini Sul K2 [Men On K2] by Achille Compagnoni. This book was published in Milano by Veronelli Editore in 1958. It is the second printing of the first edition with exactly the same format and contents. The only difference between this and the first printing is the "II" instead of "I" on the last page of the book. I met the author on two occasions in Italy. He told me that the book was a very small run, only a few hundred copies. It was later reprinted in a different format and also in paperback. This is the original format, an oblong thin hardcover book issued without dust jacket. He was a very pleasant, gregarious host -- generous and kind. Having met and spoken in detail with Compagnoni, Lacedelli and Bonatti, it is my opinion that the real block to the resolution of the 1954 K2 mess was probably Ardito Desio. Desio was a power wielder who meticulously managed the image of the 1954 expedition. Desio could have smashed both Lacedelli and Compagnoni with a few phonecalls.

The book measures 170mm tall x 247mm, and has 77 pages, 31 b/w & 8 color photos. Text is in italian (no english edition).

CONDITION: Glossy pictorial thin hardcover, no DJ issued for any copy of this book. The book is in nice condition with some rubbing to tip of one corner, small old owner private mountain-illustrated bookplate (Anders Bolinder's) on front pastedown otherwise no marks or writing on any pages, solid binding, clean. Price: $125.
