This is the 1956 original first printing of the first USA edition of LONELY CHALLENGE by Hermann Buhl. The original German edition was titled Achttausend Drüber und Drunter [München 1954], first translated into english with title Nanga Parbat Pilgrimage [London 1956]. Both the first UK and first USA editions have the same text and photos. This book, the first USA edition, was published in New York by E. P. Dutton in 1956. The book measures 215mm tall x 138mm, and has 318 pages, 3 maps, 19 b/w photos, glossary, index. Buhl’s autobiography including his solo first ascent of Nanga Parbat and a bad weather climb of Eiger N Face. Buhl was a very interesting character & personality in mountaineering history.

CONDITION: Original black cloth, silver lettered spine. Original dust jacket is in good condition (minor 1mm tiny chipping spine ends, rubbing at edges and folds). The book is in nice condition with previous owner bookplate on front pastedown, otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, tight binding, no foxing. Price: $125.
