This is the first printing of the first UK edition of THE ASSAULT ON MOUNT EVEREST 1922 by C. G. Bruce. This book was published in London by Edward Arnold & Co in 1923. The book measures 258mm tall x 175mm, and has 339 pages, 33 b/w photos, 2 folding maps, index. Bruce was the leader of this second attempt on Everest. This was the first expedition with serious plans to reach the summit. Bruce is given credit as the author on the title page but he wrote only 3 chapters in the book. Mallory wrote 5 chapters. Finch wrote 3 chapters. Somervell wrote 3 chapters. Longstaff wrote 1 chapter. This is the second of the first five main books on the early attempts to climb Mt Everest.

CONDITION: Original maroon cloth, gilt lettering front cover & spine, pages untrimmed. The book is in very good condition in original binding with no restorations. There is a trace of a name in the upper corner of the front pastedown otherwise there is no previous owner writing or marking on any pages. The covers are clean but there is some fading/dulling of the spine, a small damp mark lower front spine corner (not bad -- see photo), minor rubbing to the tips of the corners. The binding is solid and square. There is some usual browning of the EPs but no foxing. Price: SOLD.
