1954 BROAD PEAK EXPEDITION

LED BY KARL HERRLIGKOFFER

GLOSSY PHOTO FROM THE FIRST ATTEMPT TO CLIMB BROAD PEAK

This is an original glossy research file photo (released to newspapers and researchers) for the 1954 BROAD PEAK EXPEDITION led by Karl Herrligkoffer. This is not a modern copy. It is an original print on glossy photographic paper and dates from the time of the expedition. It was made from exposure to a negative in a darkroom. The print paper measures 181mm tall x 238mm (7.13 inches x 9.5 inches) with a 3mm margin around the photo image. This 1954 expedition reached 6900m on the peak in early November after a late-season start that arrived in Base Camp in mid-October. This was the first expedition ever to attempt climbing Broad Peak. Cold temperatures and high winds forced retreat from the mountain. The photo is one taken on the approach march and shows porters assembling with loads and preparing for the daily departure.

CONDITION: Original glossy photographic print. No tears, creases or discoloration. The backside of the photo has a small printed stamp in german that translates to "property of the german institute for foreign research" and has some printed file numbers in pencil. There is also some light residue from where the photo had been pasted in an album or folder (does not bleed through to the image side). Price: $35.
