This is the first printing of the first edition of SIVALAYA: THE 8000-METRE PEAKS OF THE HIMALAYA. A CHRONICLE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF EXPLORATION by Louis Baume. This book was published in Reading by Gastons-West Col in 1978. The book measures 232mm tall x 146mm, and has 316 pages, 30 maps & diagrams, large bibliography (51 pages including non-english language books). This is the most informative single-source english language chronicle & bibliography of the journeys, expeditions, and climbs relative to the 8000-meter peaks. Excellent reference that gives summaries of the earliest attempts, first ascents, and subsequent ascents. Louis Baume was a passionate mountaineering bibliophile-climber and longtime collector/seller/publisher of outstanding mountaineering books. This UK edition is superior to the US hardcover edition and less common than the US edition. The US hardcover edition was published without DJ whereas the UK edition was issued in DJ decorated with a fine photo of the gigantic Zemu face of Kanchenjunga.

CONDITION: Original orange cloth with dark green lettering and emblem on spine. The book is in fine condition with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, tight binding, no foxing. The dust jacket is clean and complete with only very minor rubbing at tips of corners. Price: $45.
