1939 First USA Edition
By Robert Bates & the team members
This is the Account of the expedition (6 climbers & 6 porters) that was the first to reach 8000m on the mountain & opened the route that was used on first ascent. It is one of the most sought-after books on climbing in the Karakoram, a classic work of mountaineering literature.
CONDITION: Nicely rebound in full leather with gilt lettering stamped on the spine. The original endpaper maps have been preserved and relaid on new endpapers. There is scattered foxing, mostly restricted to the pages that are opposite the photo plates. There is a small library blindstamp and a rubbed-off number on the dedication page (see photo), a trace of a number being erased from the copyright page (verso of title page), and a trace of number or stamp being erased from the "contents" page. The title page has no library marks. There are light traces of stamps or pockets having been removed from front and rear endpapers (see photos). Otherwise, there are no other library marks in or outside the book. The two photo plates between pages 146 and 147 have some roughness and some surface image loss where the plates were once stuck together (see photo with caption "facing plates"). That is a common (and often not noticed) problem with this book. Those are the only two plates in the the book that are face-to-face. The semi glossy paper is very prone to sticking together. Inserted now is a loose piece of tissue paper that will keep the plates from sticking together. The binding is in flawless condition. Price: $150.
