The author lived among the Callahaya (aka Callahuaya and Kallawaya) people of Bolivia in the southern Cordillera Apolobamba Andes where he studied their religion, rituals, society, the influence of the mountain environment on them. A fine ethnological study. The Callahaya have been renowned for centuries for their holistic medicinal knowledge and, more recently, for their social community structures. The trek through this remote area has become one of the most sought low-volume hikes in the Andes, being 15 to 24 hours away from La Paz, though things have changed in the last decade because rich gold deposits have been discovered and extracted in the Sunchulli region about 15 miles north of the Callahaya villages. Highly recommended reading for any who are considering visiting the region. Pictorial hardcover (no DJ issued). The book has minor grubbiness covers, a light scuff/scratch rear cover, small 5mm split upper outside front spine joint, no owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. $45.

Text in German; no English edition. Official account of the German 1932 expedition to the Cordillera Blanca Peru, the first team of highly skilled mountaineers to visit the range. This is the seminal, technical climbing book of mountaineering in the Cordillera Blanca, and for the Andes in general. Some challenging climbs in Bolivia preceded this expedition, but none accomplished as much. Nine first ascents in the Cordillera Blanca were made including Artesonraju (6025m), Huandoy (6395m), Huascaran South (6768m), Chopicalqui (6400m), Hualcan, Copa North (6173m), Copa South (6203m). The first 213 pages describe the expedition & ascents. The remaining pages are on the research: geology, cartography, culture, place names, etc. The chapters in both the climbing narrative & the research section are written by various team members: Borchers, E. Hein, E. Schneider, H. Kinzl, B. Lukas, H. Biersack, W. Bernard. The b/w photos & reproduction quality of them in this book are quite good. The big folding map was sold at additional cost to the book; hence, it is much less common than the book. The combination of book + dust jacket + map is very scarce. E. Schnieder was chief cartographer on this expedition, later the principal mapper of Everest, Mt. Kenya and other peaks. He was also a skilled mountaineer who climbed high and carried loads on most of the early German expeditions. Schnieder's photography was also much better than average. The book is in excellent condition with clean covers, a few faint tiny foxing spots to spine cloth, minor fore-edge foxing, no foxing on page faces, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, solid binding. Classic account of an attempt to climb McKinley & of the first complete circuit around Mt McKinley, led by Dr Frederick Cook in 1903. Dunn, second in command, writes rather scorchingly about Cook, referred to throughout as "the Professor." Actually, Cook comes through looking pretty good; Dunn's complaints grow petty with number & soon appear to be mostly the result of a personality clash & Dunn's superiority complex. This book is from the collection of the pioneering climber, Robert Underhill, with his name-stamp on front pastedown. Underhill made many significant first ascents including challenging traverse from the Aiguilles du Diable to Mont Blanc du Tacul, new routes on Grand Teton (SE Ridge, N Ridge, E Ridge), first ascent of Thunderboldt Peak in Sierra Nevada Pallisades, first ascent of E Face of Mt Whitney. Text in German. The very first printing of one of the most famous books in mountaineering literature. Signed by Harrer on the title page and dated by him Berlin Dec 1958. I have encountered only 4 signed copies of the true first German edition, and encountered about 20 signed copies of German language editions that were incorrectly claimed to be true first printings. A signed true first printing of the German language (Austrian) edition is very much less common than a signed first English language printing, particularly so when signed in the year of publication. - 35. LaVarre, William. Gold, Diamonds And Orchids: An Amazing Story Of A Year's Expedition Into A Lost World. NY (Revell), 1935, 1st ed, 222mm tall x 152mm, 298pp, EP map, 18 b/w photo plates. Author's prospecting expedition in the Akarai Mountains starting from British Guiana & finishing by voyage down the Rio Branco to ManĂ¡os. A fairly good read...sensationalized by lots of quoted dialogue, in this case making the account very engaging. Good book. Original beige cloth, brown lettering cover & spine. The book has faint soiling to covers, 3mm tiny split to top of spine cloth, small gift inscription on FFEP dated 1935 otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. $35.
- 36. McCormick, A. D. An Artist In The Himalayas. Ldn (T. Fisher Unwin), 1895, 1st ed, 229mm tall x 145mm, b/w frontispiece illustration + 104 b/w illustrations, folding color map. Original grey cloth, b/w illustration front cover & spine, gilt lettering front & spine, black coated EPs, TEG. The book is inscribed by the author, McCormick, to a fellow member of the expedition on the short-title page. The inscription is to Lieutenant Colonel Lloyd-Dicken who accompanied the expedition to Gilgit departing from the others there to go on a hunting expedition. He also signed this book. The Colonel is mentioned several times in the first 87 pages of the book. The Colonel penned in the top margin of the contents page, " Lloyd-Dicken/ Lynerib[?] Lodge/ An account of our tour through/ Kashmir and Gilgit/ from A. D. McCormick/ RA and RI." He later crossed out the "Gilgit" in the sentence on page 6, "...Colonel Lloyd-Dicken --- who only went with us to Gilgit...", and penned in the margin "the Pamirs in China", probably to indicate that he didn't stop his tour in Gilgit but continued alone to the Pamirs. McCormick writes on page 87 that Lloyd-Dicken went "to the Dishtal Nala to shoot." The book has dogear crease marks to the top page corners on those pages where Lloyd-Dicken is mentioned. Discovering that made me laugh. The book has slightly faded front cover and darkened spine but the black cover illustrations are easy to see (many copies have the spine illustration either too faded to see or too darkened to see), rubbing to corners and spine ends (but not through the cloth), only the aforementioned writing is on pages (no other pages have writing or pen marks), some foxing on pages mainly restricted to those pages that had dogeared corners which allowed air/humidity onto those pages, binding is cracked at a few gatherings but the binding is holding strong and not anywhere near breaking, overall slightly better than average condition for this book that frequently has major condition problems. Author inscribed or signed copies of this book are rare. JP Mountain Books has encountered only 2 signed/inscribed examples in more than 40 years of searching, this being one of those two. The first UK edition is very scarce, probably just as scarce as Eckenstein's account of the expedition -- and McCormick's account is a much better read, not only because it covers the entire expedition (Eckenstein bailed before the climbing started), but also because McCormick was a much better writer (but not great) than Eckenstein (terrible writer). $1850.
- 36. McCormick, A. D. An Artist In The Himalayas. NY (Macmillan), 1895, 1st ed, 229mm tall x 145mm, b/w frontispiece illustration + 104 b/w illustrations, folding color map. Better than usual condition for this book: clean covers, slight dulling to spine, slight bump upper front top outside corner, light rubbing spine ends, small owner bookplate on front pastedown and other owner crimp mark to FFEP (not ex-library) otherwise no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. $750.
- 37. Meade, Charles. High Mountains. Ldn (Harvill), 1954, 1st ed, 22cm tall x 14cm, 136pp, 10 b/w photos. Examination of the metaphysical nature of mountains. Author studies the experiences of many climbers throughout history who have had "mystical" or "metaphysical" epiphanies in the mountains, & he attempts to define and explain such events. When this book was published there was some heated debate on these ideas (Meade, Lunn, Young, etc. being on the hopeful side of the issue). Original grey cloth, gilt lettering spine. The book has clean covers, a little browning at base of spine, usual browning to EPs near gutter, no previous owner names or writing on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. The original dust jacket has slight wear at top spine, very faint soiling rear panel, no tears, price-clipped flap corner. $45.

Very uncommon book (FICTIONAL but accurate) probably written for young readers by an anonymous author that describes a trip to the Alps by an American couple and their two children. There is a 29 page chapter describing in detail the father's guided ascent of Mont Blanc by invitation of a fellow American traveller who he met by chance in Chamonix. This also has chapters on Chamonix (25pp), and visits to the Mer de Glace (21pp), Great Saint-Bernard (8pp), and the Lauterbrunnen Valley (35pp). Not listed in any of the major mountaineering bibliographies. Original green cloth with gilt decorated front and spine, debossed borders front and rear. Original thick paperback covers with white lettering under glossy pictorial dust jacket. One of the best guidebooks for Nepal treks. - 43. Pallis, Marco. Peaks And Lamas. NY (Knopf), 1949 rev ed, 243mm tall x 155mm, 397pp + xii + [1], 76 b/w photos, 4 maps, index. Expeditions to Garhwal & Sikkim. First ascent of central Satopant'h Pk (6116m) in 1933, & attempt on Simvu near Kangchenjunga in 1936. Author writes in preface to this edition, "...the present version of the book is the only one to be regarded as fully authoritative..." since author learned much about the religions & cultures between editions, the first edition being published in 1939. Good, sharp photos. Much on people & culture (art, architecture, beliefs, etc.) as it was prior to major Western exposure. This is quite different (better) than most expedition books about pre-WWII Himalaya expeditions because it shares the author's firsthand provocations and responses of locals to learn the indigenous cultures, religions, and social beliefs. Also, the writing is engagingly good; with the right marketing campaign this book could become a present-day bestseller. The book has clean and bright covers, no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. The original dust jacket has big 9cm wide by 4cm deep loss upper rear cover (re-colored underneath the jacket on the protector backing to make things look okay...fooled me the first time I examined the book! - 44. Salisbury, F. S. Rambles In The Vaudese Alps. NY (E. P. Dutton & Co.), 1916, 1st ed, 188mm tall x 130mm, 154pp, 8 b/w photo plates of flowers, index. Several minor peaks/passes were climb (9000 feet and lower) and there is one short chapter on his climbing up the Paneyrossaz Glacier. The text includes several lengthy descriptions of views of Mont Blanc and adjacent peaks. The writing is tortuously tedious and unnecessarily complex. Many pages past page 24 are unopened meaning whoever started reading this stopped at that early point. Original ribbed olive green cloth, gilt lettering spine, debossed decoration and borders front cover. The book has clean covers, fading to bottom 2cm of spine cloth, old owner bookplate on FFEP otherwise no owner writing or marks on any pages, no foxing, solid binding. Original ochre cloth with paper title patch tipped onto front cover (I think all copies are like this, that a printed title sheet was trimmed into a title patch and pasted onto the cover to cover manufacturer's mistake of embossed lettering underneath), a printed sheet quoting a letter from the publisher praising the author's book has been pasted to the blank page opposite title page which has caused a little rippling to the preceding page and to the title page near the top, no writing or marks on any pages, solid binding, no foxing. $75.

Hopkirk writes of it in Trespassers On The Roof Of The World, "[It] remains to this day one of the least-known stories of the war. - 50. Stuck, Hudson. The Ascent Of Denali (Mount McKinley). A Narrative Of The First Complete Ascent Of The Highest Peak In North America. NY (Scribner's), 1914, 1st ed, 214mm tall x 140mm, 188pp, 34 b/w plates, folding map. INSCRIBED by Hudson Stuck. Classic of American climbing literature. This expedition made the accepted first ascent of the South Peak, the highest, through very broken snow & ice conditions that were created by a big earthquake. Harry Karstens picked & led most of the route. The team included Walter Harper, youngest team member and a Native American. He was given the honor of being the first to set foot on the highest point. Original green cloth, gilt lettering cover & spine, grey & white decoration front cover of a climber on the mountain. This example has Stuck's calling card tipped to the front pastedown. The card is inscribed in pen in Stuck's hand, "With the warm regards of the author + his regret that through an oversight the book was not sent before March 1914. To the Rev. Philemon Sturges." In 1914, Sturges was rector of St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church, Morristown PA. He was trained at St. George's parish in New York City (1900-03) where he likely met and befriended Stuck. The book also has a folding Christmas card (no handwriting) that is illustrated with a photogravure image of Stuck at his desk with a typewriter, ice-axes hanging on the wall visible in the background. This card has printed date, 1916. There is also another, obviously later bookplate of a subsequent owner, Walter Rutherford Peterson, on the front pastedown. Peterson was a two-term governor of New Hampshire starting in 1969. On the short-title page there is a gilt sticker with the embossed wording, "Fairbanks Alaska Golden Heart -- There's A Soft Spot In It For You." On the rear pastedown there is a folded Christmas card with a b/w photo image of Mount Bertha Alaska with the inside having the printed words, "Best wishes for A MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR from Barbara and Brad Washburn." It has no handwriting or signatures. The Christmas card from Stuck has become detached and the part of the page under where it was adhered with wheat paste has lots of browning as does the backside of the card that had been adhered with the paste. The card at the rear is still adhered along one edge, the way originally placed. Overall, this example of the first edition has a splendid history, first being gifted by the author, and later being gifted by the famous Denali pioneering climbers, Barbara and Bradford Washburn. The book has generally clean covers, slight darkening to spine, very minor bump outside upper cover corners, light rubbing tips corners (just loss of coloring, not rubbed through cloth), some rubbing to cover decoration, no writing or marks on pages (other than the EP cards and sticker on short-title page), no foxing, solid binding. $2300.
