Also includes account by Zurbriggen of new route up Mt Cook (was 3764m, now 3745m after top avalanched away 15 Dec 1991). original ochre cloth, TEG, leather title patches with gilt lettering spine. ex-library with only a few library marks (bookplate on front pastedown, crimp on title page, residue from library card pocket being pulled from rear, slight trace of spine sticker removal from covers -- no other library marks), original covers are relatively clean, no restorations or alterations, the spine patches have some fading but no significant loss and all the gilt lettering is clear and bright except for the publisher name at the base, solid binding (much better than most copies of this bulky book), no foxing and very clean & bright pages, a better than average condition example of this book that is usually found in worn condition, VG SOLD.

One of the classic books of mountaineering in South America, attempts with author & final solo push and 1st ascent of Aconcagua (6961m) by Matthias Zurbriggen (great guide who later succumbed to alcoholism, poverty, and suicide by hanging in 1917). Also detailed account of 2nd ascent of Aconcagua (by Vines & Lanti) & 1st ascent of Tupungato (6551m) by Vines & Zurbriggen. A tidbit: Echevarría writes in 1995 AAJ, “the name of Aconcagua is universally, but wrongly, accepted to be a translation from the Quechua-Aimara Acon (stone) and cagua (sentinel). But no Quechua or Aimara term acon, or anything faintly similar, has been found to mean ‘stone.’ The original name was Ancocagua, the ‘White Sentinel.’ Explorer Jerónimo de Vivar found and correctly entered the proper name already in 1558, but the Aimara adjective anco (white) had its letter order transposed during colonial times.” orig green cloth, gilt lettering cover & spine. from the collection of Baily Willis with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Willis was a US geologist who made one of the first maps of Mt Rainier, explored in Patagonia, etc. The book also has another Willis signature on the short-title page dated 1907. Account of Forbes’ visit to the mountains of Norway where he went to study the glaciers & to corroborate his new theories on glacial movement & action. Slingsby considered this a classic work. This also contains the first detailed account in English of the Dauphiné Alps & Bernese Oberland, including his ascent of the Jungfrau. Concludes with chapter on the first crossing the Mont Blanc range via the glacier of Le Tour, Narrative Of The Passage Of The Col De Salena, From The Valley Of Chamouni To That Of Ferret In 1850. original brown cloth boards with embossed borders and patterns front and back, rebacked with matching material & original title (gilt lettering) part of spine laid on spine (though the letter N from NORWAY is missing), foxing mainly restricted to plate margins & tissues, edge rubbing mainly at corners, bump lower front corner, above average condition for this book that is usually found quite worn when in original covers, VG $550.

The author—twice decorated— “drove” a flying ambulance in WWI & worked for the British Secret Service in Syria. This describes her clandestine entry into Afghanistan, stay in Kabul, Kandahar, journey to Doab, Tadjikistan, Bokahara and finally Samarkand. Text in german. The very first printing of one of the most famous books in mountaineering literature. signed by Harrer on title page and dated by him 7.1.1959. The true first printing in german is quite uncommon. There were many various reprints in german, and usually they are confused by dealers as being the true first printing. I have encountered only 3 signed copies of the true first german edition, and encountered about 20 signed copies of german language editions that were incorrectly claimed to be true first printings. He had secretly been working with F. M. Bailey on the project. The author, a White Russian, was betrayed before the plan was activated, and he avoided capture by the Reds by fleeing over the Tien Shan mountains to Kashgar. An amazing true story of adventurous escape. The author wrote another book, Moved On!, published in 1935 that describes his time in Kashgar and subsequent escape over the Karakoram Pass. This 1971 first edition is the nicest. Author’s personal accounts of British 1922 & 1924 attempts on Everest & autobiographical notes mostly relating to his medical work & travels in India following the 1924 climb. On the 1922 expedition Somervell, Mallory and Norton became the first people ever to climb above 8000 meters under their own power (some balloon guys had gone higher, some dying). They reached about 8200 meters on Everest without supplemental oxygen. Somervell was an extremely gifted man with disparate talents. He was also one of the strongest & smartest of all the early Everest climbers. About half the book is on Everest. original green cloth, gilt lettering spine. She was a fascinating lady; in 1928 she held her father in Africa while he died after a lion attack (very little about that in this book). This book covers her return to Africa: a lone, two month stay (1928) high on Mt Kenya (121pp, with photos of the mtn). She explored much of the mountain and on her visit to the “Curling Pond” she witnessed the famous ascent of Batian and Nelion by Harris, Shipton and Sommerfelt and greeted them with hot tea & then dinner when they descended. A cornerstone classic in the literature of mountaineering. The first mountaineering book to appeal to a wide audience, this book had a real impact on the growth of mountaineering as a sport. Solid, sturdy edition about the same size as the original 1871 first edition with the same contents as the slightly revised 1900 fifth edition. The most successful of all early Andean mountaineering expeditions. The US edition consists of one volume (UK is two vols). rebound in green cloth boards with green leather spine and corners ruled in gilt, raised bands spine in 6 compartments, gilt lettering spine, TEG, marbled EPs. Fancy rebind but rubbed patches on leather front and rear, rubbed corners and edges, leather cracking near spine ends (but spine is solid and not about to break, complete with all pages, plates and maps. Author made the first serious attempt to climb Mt McKinley in 1903 — up Peters Glacier reaching about 8000ft. Party was stopped by an enormous face, now called the Wickersham Wall. About 120 pages of the book are devoted to the Mt. McKinley trip. Author was US District Judge in Alaska from 1900-1908.
