IN THE ICE WORLD OF THE HIMALAYA...

AMONG THE PEAKS AND PASSES

OF LADAKH, NUBRA, SURU, AND BALTISTAN

1901 EDITION

WITH MATHIAS ZURBRIGGEN IN THE KARAKORAM AND THE BIAFO GLACIER

This is the second edition of IN THE ICE WORLD OF THE HIMALAYA... -- AMONG THE PEAKS AND PASSES OF LADAKH, NUBRA, SURU, AND BALTISTAN by Fanny Bullock Workman and William Hunter Workman. This book was published in 1901 by Cassell & Company in New York. The book measures 210mm tall x 140mm, and has 204 pages, 65 b/w photos. The first of the authors’ several books on mountain exploration. This book covers their trips of 1898 & 1899. In 1898 they traveled through Ladakh to the Karakoram Pass, Kangi La, Bhot Kol, and then to the “Singalela Spur of Kinchinjanga.” On this trip they took a picture—included in this book—of Mt Everest [from the SE near Chia Banjan] and they correctly identify it “Gaurisankar (Mt. Everest) 29,002, from Sikkim.” [It shows Everest SE Ridge & Kangshung Face jutting above the Lhotse-Makalu ridge. Gillman’s superb book, Everest, has a photo by C. White taken sometime in 1903-4 guessing that it might be the 1st true photo portrait of Everest. The photo here in the Workmans’ book is from a closer distance & better defined, and it was taken in 1898]. In 1899 they hired the famous Swiss guide, Mathias Zurbriggen, who led them through some of earth’s orogenic treasures and a few minor ascents: Nubra Valley, Skardu & Shigar, Askole, Hispar Pass, ascent of Biafo Gl (59km long), Skoro La Range, first ascent of the “Siegfriedhorn” [though not mentioned in any of their published works, Siegfried was the name of their son who died from pneumonia at age 3 & 1/2 in 1893], first ascent of “Mount Bullock Workman,” 1st ascent of Koser Gunge (ca 21000'), chapter on diet & physiological effects of high altitude.

CONDITION: Original red cloth with white lettering spine. This version of the second edition was published without the two folding maps at the rear, despite their being called for on the title page. We have examined many copies of this book to make this conclusion. This copy has fine color photocopies of them made by JP Mountain Books that have been recently bound into the book at the end. Only copies of the second edition with title lettering on the front cover and gilt lettering on the spine were issued with the folding maps. Copies (like this one) with no cover lettering and with spine lettering in white were not issued with the two folding maps. The spine lettering on this copy is almost completely depleted. The covers are clean and not rubbed. The book has no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, tight binding, all plates are present, clean pages. Price: $125.
