SCRAMBLES AMONGST THE ALPS IN THE YEARS 1860-69
BY EDWARD WHYMPER
1871 FIRST EDITION
RARE ORIGINAL BINDING IN NICE CONDITION
NO RESTORATIONS TO THE COVERS OR BINDING
This is the first UK edition ("Fifth Thousand") of SCRAMBLES AMONGST THE ALPS IN THE YEARS 1860-69 by Edward Whymper. This book was published in London by John Murray in 1871. The “fifth thousand” on the title page means that this is an example of the first edition printed after copy number 4000 and before copy number 5001 (but no copies are individually numbered by the publisher). Later in 1871, there was a printing that states “second edition” on the title page. Therefore, this is a later printing of the first edition, issued before the “second edition.” I have never seen a copy that has "first" or “second” or “third” thousand printed on the title page, but I have seen ones with “fourth” thousand printed on the title page. All of copies of the 1871 first edition of the book were issued in the same green decorated cloth binding with black coated EPs. There were no revisions of the book until the 1894 edition. The book measures 225cm x 160mm, and has 468 pages, 22 full page engravings, 107 in-text engravings, 5 folding maps & a folding snow section chart, 8 appendices, index. Examples of the 1871 first edition in the original binding still in nice condition without any restorations or repairs are now very scarce. One of the most popular mountaineering books ever published, and certainly the most popular mountaineering book of all time concerning climbs in the Alps.
