This is the 1987 USA edition of TRAVELS AMONGST THE GREAT ANDES OF THE EQUATOR by Edward Whymper. This book was published in Salt Lake City by Peregrine Smith Books in 1987. The book measures 258mm tall x 170mm, and has 456 pages, 20 full page engravings, 118 text engravings, 41 colour photos, 4 maps (1 is folding), index. Very well done reprint of the original classic. This was the most successful of the early mountaineering expeditions in the Andes. First ascents of the major peaks Chimborazo (climbed twice: SW Ridge & NNW side), Cayambe, Antisana, near ascent of Illiniza (by the Carrel cousins), Carihuairazo, Sara Urco, Cotocachi & Sincholagua. Also fifth ascent of Cotopaxi (first climbed by Reiss & Escobar in 1872) & bivouac on summit, ascent of Corazon which was first climbed in 1738 by La Condamine & Bouguer. Exactly the same text and illustrations as the first edition except for well done additional colour photos & new introduction. Excellent edition.
