SECOND EXPEDITION TO MOUNT SAINT ELIAS, IN 1891
BY ISRAEL RUSSELL
1893 FIRST EDITION
PRIMARY EXPLORATION AND ATTEMPTED ASCENT
This is the first printing of SECOND EXPEDITION TO MOUNT SAINT ELIAS, IN 1891 by Israel Russell. This was published in Washington D.C. by the United States Geological Survey in 1893. This measures 293mm tall x 196mm, and has 91 pages, 17 b/w photo plates, 2 maps, 6 figures. This newly bound, 91 page account has been extracted from the 13th Annual Report Of The United States Geological Survey To The Secretary Of The Interior 1891-92. This was actually the 4th expedition to attempt climbing St Elias (Russell’s second attempt, his first being in 1890). Led by Russell, the expedition was “scientific” studying glaciers & geology of the region, however the main objective was to ascend the mountain. This expedition discovered and climbed the route that was later used for the first ascent by the Duke of Abruzzi. Russell & his two partners would have reached the summit had they put their last camp higher on the mountain on the NE col (herein Russell makes this recommendation for future attempts). On this attempt they retreated from above the col—now designated Russell Col—6,500 feet above their highest camp, when it was obvious that the summit could not be reached without a bivouac in the open.
