This is the first edition (first printing) published in Cambridge UK by The University Press in 1949. The book measures 223mm tall x 139mm. It has 233 pages, 83 b/w photos, 6 maps (1 is folding), index. This is the account of author's trip to the Gilgit region & attempt on Rakaposhi, followed by an expedition to Chinese Turkestan, and an attempt with Eric Shipton to climb Muztagh Ata where both got frostbite on their toes. The last part of the book describes Tilman's solo expedition to the source of Oxus & across the frontier of Afghanistan (Wakhan) where he was arrested as a spy because he had no visa.

CONDITION: Original fine blue cloth with gilt lettering spine. The book is signed and dated by Tilman (the author) on the title page. No writing and no marks on any pages. Covers are clean and not rubbed. Binding is tight. Book is 100% complete. No pages are folded and there are no crease marks on any page corners. The original dust jacket is lightly worn at spine ends and tips corners. The dust jacket has a clean 2cm tear at top of spine and another clean 1cm tear upper edge front cover. The original price is present on flap. No flap corners have been clipped. Books that have been signed by H.W. Tilman are very uncommon and very scarce. Price: SOLD.
