LIONEL TERRAY SIGNED CARD
FULL SERIES SET OF FÉLIX POTIN COLLECTOR CARDS
EXPLORERS AND AVIATOR SET 1952
FULL SET MOUNTED ON MATCHING COLLECTOR BOARD
L. TERRAY CARD SIGNED BY TERRAY
This is a full set of the "EXPLORATEURS ET AVIATEURS" CARDS published in 1952 by Félix Potin, a large retail chain of stores in France. I think these were sold with chocolate bars, but I am not certain about this. The Lionel Terray card is signed on the front by Lionel Terray in blue pen. It is a real signature and not a reproduction. The set also includes portrait cards of mountaineers Maurice Herzog, Louis Lachenal, and René Ferlet, plus pioneering aviators and some later polar explorers. The set is mounted on the official collector board issued by Potin that has printed border, title, and small illustration. The cardboard boards for these cards are much less common than the cards themselves. Full sets with boards are the least common. The board measures 217mm tall x 292mm (8.63 inches 11.56 inches) and the cards measure 64mm tall x 40mm. The Terray card was signed after the card had been mounted and has the end of his signature extending off the card across the board and onto the adjacent card for Paul-Émile Victor. Lionel Terray signatures are somewhat uncommon, and are very uncommon on cards and photos. This might be the only Potin card signed by Terray. His signature is most frequently found in books inscribed by him to friends and clients of his mountaineering guiding business. Lionel Terray was one of the best all-around mountaineers of the 1940s to 1960s. He made the first ascent of Makalu, Jannu, Cerro FitzRoy and the second ascent of the Eigerwand. He was a key member of the successful 1950 first ascent of Annapurna expedition. His book, Conquistadors Of The Useless, is often regarded as the overall best mountaineering book in the literature.
